The new Honda CR-Z hybrid sports car has spurred plenty of comparisons to the iconic CR-X. But the CR-X was not popular for its stock power, but rather it became sought after as the ultimate tuner vehicle. Honda is hoping to duplicate that appeal with the CR-Z.

According to John Mendel, 55, executive vice president for automobile sales at American Honda Motor Co., the CR-Z is attracting a unique demographic because ”it’s reminiscent of the CR-X, which was the ultimate tuner vehicle.” Both older and younger buyers are also intrigued by the new model because of its practicality and sportiness.

“We thought maybe the hybrid would turn the tuners off,” Mendel said. “Basically, they just say, ‘It’s 20 extra horsepower — what the hell.’ ”

In helping to attract younger buyers, those who may not remember the CR-X, Honda will be promoting the CR-Z via social media and through the sponsoring of concerts and various musical acts.

Because of the newness of the CR-Z, it remains to be seen whether it will become one of the new car specials Waterbury. However, even new models often qualify for incentive financing deals at Honda Washington DC.
