Honda has announced that 344,000 Honda Odyssey minivans and 68,000 Element crossovers between the 2007 and 2008 model years will be recalled due to a problem with the braking system. The issue could impair the vehicles’ ability to stop if repairs are not made.
Over time, the issue may become noticeable to the driver as the brake pedals can feel “soft” when pressed. It may also require drivers to press the brake pedal closer to the floor in order to stop the vehicle. If left unchecked, the issue could progress resulting in a loss of braking power and possibly a collision.
“Although not all vehicles being recalled are affected by this issue, we are recalling all possible units to assure all customers that their vehicles will perform correctly,” Honda said in a statement.
The issue stems from the electronic stability control system which applies the brakes of individual wheels to keep vehicles stable in the event of an emergency maneuver. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, three crashes have been linked to this issue, but no major injuries or deaths have been reported.
Drivers concerned about their vehicle’s braking power are encouraged to visit their nearest Honda dealer immediately. The complete list of affected vehicles will become available after April 19. In the meantime, drivers can also check Honda recalls online or call (800) 999-1009 for additional information.
