The current Honda Civic offers attractive features at an attractive price, but the dramatic styling may not be for everyone. More importantly, the normal five-year product cycle would require that the next generation Civic arrive soon. However, Honda executives are now saying otherwise.
According to John Mendel, American Honda Motor’s executive vice president, the next generation Honda Civic will not arrive until 2011, which is beyond the normal span of the five-year product life cycle. The reason for this, as Mendel explained recently, is due to rapidly changing market conditions as well as the all-new fuel economy standards that effects cars that are almost completely development, such as the Civic.
Although it was originally slated to arrive in Washington DC Honda showrooms this fall, the new Honda Civic will not be available until next year, but a more exact date has not been released.
“In general, we are not changing cycles,” he said. “We change vehicles as need be. The ability to do something based on more current information is better than waiting a full model cycle. Some of that is being able to have the opportunity to change [based on] what you see happening in the marketplace.”
With about 1 million Civics sold per year worldwide, perhaps it’s no surprise that Honda wants to get the formula just right.
